Apple's CarPlay is finally here, the integrated experience that makes the iPhone part of your car. Here's what you need to know about Apple's CarPlay!
Apple launches CarPlay, integrating your iPhone with your car. Drivers can place phone calls, listen to voice mail messages, access contacts and have text messages read to them by Siri.
CarPlay will launch automatically on the display when you connect your iPhone via your own Lightning-to-USB cable and you can control it with your voice, a touchscreen or buttons.
Ferrari, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and Hyundai are all launching vehicles with CarPlay support initially. A broad range of automakers are expected to follow, including BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, General Motors, Jaguar, Land Rover, Peugeot, KIA, Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki and more.
CarPlay relies heavily on Siri, so you can play tracks, answer calls, and launch the turn-by-turn navigation without taking your hands off the wheel. It also works with your car’s controls — knobs, buttons, or a touch screen interface. Apple’s Maps also integrated with CarPlay to provide directional instructions, including turn-by-turn directions that show up on a car's screen. Apple has confirmed that CarPlay will compatible with all its smartphones with a Lightning connector – that’s an iPhone 6plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 5, and iPhone 5C or an iPhone 5S. You can also mount an iPad or iPad mini to get CarPlay into your car.
In order get CarPlay, you won't have a buy a new car. Pioneer and Alpine have both already announced that their multimedia systems will support CarPlay.
