Its International Womens Day! We should know and share why we still need women's day more than a century after it was launched.
The aim of Womens Day is to recognize women, and envisions a world where each woman and girl can exercise her choices; such as participating in politics, getting an education, having an income, and living in societies free from violence and discrimination.
Here are just 10 out of the many reasons why we need a day for women and its importance now.
#Girl Education we need to stand for the next generation of women. By getting all girls around the world into school, we can ensure they have the opportunity to grow, learn and lead. #Gender Gap
Even now, the gender gap remains wide. In almost every country, women work same or longer hours than men and are paid less. Gender discrimination doesn't stop there. Pregnant mothers face even more of challenge when they try and return to the work place. If the skills and qualifications of women who are currently out of work were fully utilized, the world would be a better place to live.
#Physical & Sexual voilence
Women are facing all sorts of physical & sexual violence everyday, they are beaten, sexually abused, and murdered. Violence against women and girls are growing and its reported these days, and on top of that, all women face everyday sexism – whether it’s in the workplace or the street. A documentary filmed in India recently shown the rapist of a woman who was brutally gang raped and killed on a Delhi bus blame his victim for the horrendous attack: "A girl is more responsible for rape than a boy." Its high time for us to respond!
#Poverty
Women account for 70% of the population still living in absolute poverty. # Domestic Violence
On average, a big percent of women who have been in a relationship report that they have experienced some form of physical or sexual violence by their partner. To make this worst, 603 million women live in countries where domestic violence is not yet considered a crime. So this domestic violence campaign inspired by the twitter sensation #TheDress become more powerful and it has strong message. #Death during Pregnancy or Childbirth
Every 90 seconds, a woman dies during pregnancy or childbirth. Most of these deaths are preventable, but due to gender-based discrimination many women are not given the proper education or care they need. #Forced Marriage
Around 15 million girls, some as young as eight years old, are forced into marriage in every year. Over 60 million girls worldwide are child brides, married before the age of 18. After marriage, Women in ten countries around the world are legally bound to obey their husbands. #HIV/AIDS
More than 16.4 million women in the world have HIV/AIDS. But most of these women are not given proper awareness or health care. #Trafficking
An estimated 1.2m children are trafficked into slavery each year; 80 per cent are girls. #Abortion
Sex-selective abortion and infanticide is a cause of concern in many countries, especially those in East and South Asia, where an inordinately high social value is placed on having male over female children. So, start spreading words. Its our day! Happy Womens Day..
